Gathered tab top velvet panels

Postby angelalee511 » November 21st, 2017, 7:54 am

I don't have great pictures yet, but I thought I'd show you what I have so far.

This is the full panel, but it's missing 4 of the "little collars" I didn't realize I only had one on when I snapped this.

These are the tabs pinned to the front panel. The tabs are two layers of fabric stitched together, then gathered, then folded over and attached to the panel. I had to stitch one side of the tab first to try to flatten it. Then the other side was stitched, and finally the back which was also velvet. That's 6 layers of fabric with 4 of those gathered! My machine didn't like this at all.

I really needed a clapper to flatten these layers. So what's a girl to do when her patience has been really tried? She adapts. I had these antique irons that I use for book marks. So before each layer was stitched, I pressed them down and laid these irons on top to use in lieu of the clapper! I wish I had thought of it when I stitched the first two panels. :rotflo: I had a long layer of extra lining fabric that I used for a press cloth.

This is the back of the finished panel, collars attached.

And this is how that humongous panel looked at my sewing desk. LOL

And this is what happens when a silly girl tries to gather that panel along with her pins and hoist them up on her work table. Oh my what a mess! I'm fairly certain this is the point where I lost my religion!

I hope to have pictures of the installed panels after the holidays.

Angela,

I love love the way those collars look on the tabs. The panels look great.

Those pins - I can only imagine.

Pictures tell so much more! I admired you before, for taking on these home decor projects. You are now my hero!! I cannot imagine stitching all that heavy velvet on your sewing desk! You amaze me.

I think we all can feel your pain over the spilled pins. A very creative use for the antique irons! I have one from my grandmother. When I get frustrated with modern irons, it reminds me to be thankful. :)

Your client must be thrilled with these! Thank you for sharing the photos and explanations.

My mercy, Angela. I can't imagine gathering, then attaching those tabs. Fabulous!
