Back in July when our son-in-law took the children for their "Grand Circle Tour" out West, our daughter decided that this year for Christmas they would redecorate MK's room as her Santa gift. She will be 12 in February, so she is very much a "tween", and has been talking about "needing" some new furniture. Her design aesthetic is very different than Lisbeth's or mine, which pretty much leans to traditional for me, and/or vintage for Lisbeth. MK loves modern, Hollywood glam style. So Lisbeth began gathering pieces that would create that space for MK in July. She was working with white as the base color with pops of blue and hot pink. She wound up having to rent a storage space as the furnishings began coming in. Since she is a pharmacist and had to work on Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas, she knew they would not be coming here for the traditional Santa visit. This was the perfect year for such a surprise. MK's room is a converted attic space. As you walk into the room from the stairway, you enter the main space which has slanted ceilings toward the other facing wall. To the right is a small space where they formerly had a reading area with a window seat. Also the door to the right is her bathroom they finished reworking about two years ago. It had been just a half bath with only a toilet and a vanity, but they took in some space from a former closet and added a walk-in shower to the bath. Again back at the entrance from the stairway, to the left is a larger space than on the right which was always her play space. It has been converted now to her vanity area and a study area. Our son-in-law did all this building and electrical work last week while the children were down here with their other grandparents. He added to the window seat base enough width to make a full sized platform built-in bed on the smaller side. Under the mattress are storage spaces for blankets or whatever they are needed for. The hinged top of the window seat is also still functional to store those much loved stuffed animals she will never part with! On the larger side, he built in a desk all across the width of the dormer. The lower doors open out wide so many things can slide into them. He added the cord ports along the top for her new computer and printer. The cork board on the wall to the right of the desk is for pinning up reminders or whatever she wants to put there. There is an alcove just inside this space out of the main room where he built in a vanity space for her. They put up the old style Hollywood vanity lights so she has plenty of brightness to do her makeup and hair. And there is a full length mirror on the wall to the left of her vanity to check her appearance before leaving for school. In the main part of the room they set up a lounge area for her. This is the space where her twin beds had been before, since this is the largest area of the suite. There is a chimney wall that is just about centered along the left side wall. On the back of that, he built a shelf so there is some display space behind her small sectional sofa. You see their house phone along with some other display things there. There is a "C" table on the far side of the sofa with a lamp. To the front of the chimney wall is a zig-zag shelf with all of her treasures. She loves collecting rocks and other mementos from their camping/hiking trips out west and really wherever they go. She is quite the adventure seeker! A lot of her agate collection is housed in those gold specimen boxes as are her other treasures from their National Park vacations. The hot pink narrow chests are 3 individual chests from IKEA that Lisbeth screwed together, painted, and then added the campaign style hardware to. That holds her 32" television and has the two lamps on each side. (the shades need straightening!! Is anybody else OCD about those silly things?
) Her former beautiful wool Oriental rugs are rolled up and stored and the white fur rug has taken it's place in the sitting room. The acrylic waterfall coffee table was custom made in that small size for her and the fur covered footstool fits perfectly under it. The huge dog painting is a print Lisbeth mounted on a cradle canvas, gilded the edges, and then covered with the shiny finish. It had been intended to go over the sofa, but it was too large for that space. The map at the foot of her bed is her favorite thing! She loves telling about the adventures she has had all over the US as she looks at the map! Lisbeth monogrammed the desk chair and several pillows with vinyl. MK was so funny when they got home Christmas morning. She had been asleep in the truck coming home and was sort of sleep walking up the stairs to go to bed. She saw the big bow on the doors with the gift tag from Santa. She opened the door and said she couldn't find her bed! She went back downstairs to get her daddy and he got Mommy up so they could all go figure out what in the world had happened to her room!!!
Sorry for the long story, but she was simply taken with her new room. The BEST. PRESENT. EVER. !!! Lots of pictures to follow.
As you can see in the last picture, there were new gold accessories purchased for her desk - stapler, scissors, paper clips, etc. She was THRILLED with everything! Our little grands are so loved and have the best parents who truly give them the gift of time every single day. I loved being in on the surprise!
