What is your favorite, I can't live with sewing tool?

Postby nonie » September 10th, 2016, 3:58 pm

Mine is the tailor ham, I use it to press so many things and really, really miss it because I can not find it right now. I think my second favorite is the sleeve board, I use it as an ironing board, for tiny things.

What is your favorite?

I love my tailor's ham so much that I ended up with an extra--spotted one in an unopened package at an estate sale and couldn't pass it up for $2. I hate to admit that I couldn't live without my seam ripper, but where would I be without it? I've tried many, many, but my current favorites are the brown-handled Clover and the Fons and Porter. I think I've tried so many because I'm a lefty and what works well for you righties might not be as comfortable or work as well for me. Think about it. 90% of the population is righthanded, and sewing tools as well as everything else, were likely designed with righthanders in mind.

I'm going to say the little nickel shaped screw driver is my favorite tool, second would be a nickel if I misplaced the original. It seems I use so much cotton linty thread for my quilts, that I have to clean out the whole area under the pressure foot and bobbin area often.

The next important item would be the Fons and Porter seam ripper. That nice soft round handle is so comfy to use, and the ripper is so easy to use in the correct way. I never pierce/slice fabric with it, and have the occasion come up quite often to rippit, rippit.

Seems like we all like our irons and ironing accessories!

I also have to agree on the presser feet. I just purchased 3 new ones for the used Bernina I bought several months ago. It came with several feet, but none were perfect for our tiny piping, joining laces and other types of heirloom sewing. Bernina was having a sale, so I made a dash to the dealer!

The two things I always have by the side of my machine are a hem gauge and a Purple Thang. I use it a lot when turning little collars or other items, to poke out corners and smooth seams -- without poking holes! It also helps to hold or control somethings under the presser foot, when stitching.

Don't guess I could sew if I could only have one special tool! :)

I do also love my "purple thang" and am sure it saved my fingers lots of times.

I just bought a tiny Steamfast iron which has become my new favorite thing. It works as well as a full size but the steam is concentrated into three holes in the part near the tip. It works so well for baby clothes because it is tiny. I use my sleeve board as a little ironing board and my lace shaping board for flat ironing.

My most unusual favorite sewing tool is a cuticle nipper that I use for everything. Nothing is better for pulling out stitches or for removing embroidery stitches when things go wrong. It has that tiny pointed end that gets in tiny spots and like a tweezer grabs on and gets the thread out.

My other favorite is my Frixion pens. I use them to mark everything and then one swipe with an iron or a shot of steam and the mark disappears. I know there have been reports of the marks coming back and reports of them not disappearing but I am unable to reproduce that happening. Since I work mostly on white if I were going to have a problem it would have happened a year or two ago since I use them every day for everything. My favorite colors are the lime green and the orange.

I love to hear what everyone's favorites are. I do also have a million of those six inch rulers with the sliding red indicator. I do use them for everything. Our dollar store used to have them.

Nancy, I will have to look for that small iron! I have the Clover ironing wand that was one of the first small pressing tools on the market. It is great for bonding appliques at the machine, but I have wanted something between it and my normal iron for baby clothes and other small projects. I looked at several recently, but wasn't sure how good any of them were.

Thanks for mentioning it!

Mine is my "picker undunner" as the munchkins call it... especially when I sew away beautifully only to find the piece "A" has been sewn to piece "C" instead of piece "B" and I have done a mile of them!!!!!!!
Actually, now that I am quilting more then general sewing my quarter inch foot is very important. In fact it is a permanent fixture on my machine at the moment.

I have a favorite seam ripper they gave us at Babylock club that flips out, and it is so handy. Plus it stays sharp. I also love my tweezers, and I use them ALL of the time to thread my machines.
My other favorite is this tiny ironing board my son-in-law found at a yard sale. I've used it for baby clothes, doll clothes, and anytime I need to get into corners.

I have so many. I'm a gadget girl. I love my 1/4" foot, point turner, piping ruler, bodkin, Roxanne's glue baste it, Wonder tape, bias ruler.

I also keep tracing paper and tape dispenser for altering patterns.
