What is your favorite non sewing-sewing tool??

Postby nonie » September 14th, 2016, 4:18 pm

Mine is the wooden skewers I think are for cooking. Have never used them in the kitchen but could not live without them in the sewing room. They are such a wonderful tool for helping feed things into the sewing machine and even into the pleater. I do have some flower pots that hold scissors and pens, those are painted and cute.
I know you probably have something that works in the sewing room.

I like my skewers too Nonie and my lint brush. It helps pick up all those little stray threads off my cutting table. Oh and I just bought some mini clothes pins from Walmart for $1.50. I'm going to try them in place of the clips and see if they work as well.

I have some dental tools that work wonders in small areas.

Chopsticks. Great for stuffing those skinny little dolly arms and such. I also have a can or two that my boys decorated in school in which I place tools that I want to keep handy next to my machine.

These are what I call non-traditional sewing tools. Things you use that you wouldn't find in a sewing department. Do you have something like these that you use?

I am sure I can come up with more tools that I use. Karen, what are those and what are they used for?

I use these so much it just seems to be normal sewing tools. The basket is made for organizing letters (I think) but works for keeping patterns I am using or plan to use at hand and the skewers, tape and glue (yes it washes out) just are always on hand.
The comb is for combing my pleats.

I second the Frixion markers - use them every day. That and my cuticle nippers that I use every day for getting a good grip on threads. I will have to try a skewer. I think that is probably like my "purple thang" that I use so I don't sew my fingers.

I do like the glue too but I use the sewing one. The kind in that accordion bottle (maybe Roxanne?) and the kind in the little tubes that comes in blue or pink.

Painter's Blue Tape!! I love that stuff!! I use it on my machine bed to mark seam allowance guides, to pick up tiny pieces of Golden Threads paper leftover when I quilt, to hold buttons in place, etc.

A stainless steel bookbinder's awl - the tip is so tiny that it fits between the center of the machine foot for "helping" things through. It is much smaller than the woden skewer - probably more like the dental tools previously mentioned. I also love the oil pen that Karen shared. :) And my newest addition is a metal woodworker's ruler with 1/16" markings that your fine line pencil or pen will fit through.

A dental tool from my daughter, Audrey. One end is a teensy straight pick. The other is also teensy but curved, great for picking out stitches, slipping under the presser foot, holding things down while sewing, etc. I use it constantly.

I'm also a big Frixion pen fan.

Lately a very tiny phillips head screwdriver has become indispensable. These are often used on the bag hardware with very tiny screws.

I just found another one--Command Hooks. I guess they're more of a sewing room organizational tool than an actual sewing tool. I needed some more space for hanging rulers. I saw an idea on Pinterest to hang them on the (unused) sides of a sewing cabinet. Since most of us probably don't want holes in that spot (at least I don't), Command Hooks are a great option for hanging them without nailing/drilling holes in your nice cabinets. Plus, you can remove them and/or relocate them later. I'm thinking the sides of my metal pattern filing cabinet look a little bare... I also saw where somebody put a piece of pegboard on the side of a cabinet to hang sewing notions, but I'm done with pegboard, so that's not appealing to me--plus it seems you'd have to fasten it on in some sort of "permanent" way that might ruin the aesthetics of the cabinet if you re-think that storage option later.
